[NEWS] ASUU strike stalls Niger University of Education take-off

Abuja – The just-ended strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU) has stalled the take-off of the Niger University of Education, an official of the state has said.

The state’s commissioner for tertiary education, Mohammed Bashir, said at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai staff awards ceremony on Sunday that all the paper work for the take-off of the institution had been done.

Bashir said that Governor Babangida Aliyu had signed the bill establishing the university as passed by the state house of assembly.

He said he would lead a delegation to the National Universities Commission in January to fast-track its immediate take-off.

“But for the ASUU strike, our University of Education, where we intend to produce quality teachers for our primary and secondary schools, would have commenced”.

“Now that it is over, I will be leading a team to the NUC in Abuja by the second week of next month”.

“This administration is committed to the take off of the university; the bill for its establishment has been signed into law”.

“All that are needed for the university to start are already in place,” Bashir said. – NAN
